MB&F’s SP One: A New Chapter in Horological Elegance

MB&F has just unveiled the SP One—a timepiece that marks a striking departure from the brand’s typically bold creations. As the debut model in the new Special Projects line, it introduces a more restrained elegance while retaining MB&F’s trademark mechanical artistry.

From Avant-Garde to Understated Innovation

Founded in 2005 by Maximilian Büsser, MB&F—short for Maximilian Büsser & Friends—has earned a reputation for pushing the boundaries of traditional watchmaking. Its Horological Machines and Legacy Machines are celebrated for their futuristic designs and kinetic sculptures. The SP One, however, represents a new path. Based on a 2018 sketch titled Three Circles, the concept matured during the introspective pause of 2020. It reflects MB&F’s ability to embrace a quieter form of creativity, without abandoning its identity.

Technical Architecture with a Sense of Weightlessness

The SP One is powered by a manual-winding movement, entirely developed in-house. Composed of 191 components and 31 jewels, it beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour and offers a 72-hour power reserve. The core of the watch consists of three “floating” elements: the barrel, the balance wheel, and the inclined time display. This angled reading position, enabled by conical gearing, improves legibility from the wrist while preserving visual balance. The illusion of levitation is enhanced by a case construction with dual sapphire crystals, revealing the mechanical layers like a suspended sculpture.

Design and Comfort: The Smallest MB&F Yet

At 38mm in diameter for a mere 12mm in height, the SP One is the smallest and slimmest MB&F to date. The case has an organic, pebble-like profile—polished and bezel-less—with lugs that seem to disappear into the strap. It’s available in 18K rose gold with an anthracite inner flange, or 950 platinum with a sky-blue flange. Both versions come on hand-stitched calfskin straps with matching pin buckles. This watch is designed for collectors who appreciate refinement over flamboyance, and who seek a piece that can quietly anchor a wardrobe without shouting for attention.

Final Thoughts: A New Dimension of MB&F

The SP One is not a limited edition, but its production will be naturally limited by the complexity of its assembly. Priced at 58,000 CHF in rose gold and 63,000 CHF in platinum (excluding VAT), it is available through MB&F retail partners and M.A.D. Galleries worldwide. More than a watch, it’s a reminder that evolution doesn’t have to be loud—sometimes, the most radical thing a brand can do is embrace silence. Honestly, it’s refreshing to see MB&F whisper… and still turn heads. And for a more radical approach, check out the MB&F HM8 Mark 2 Purple !
